Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor are available for all instructors at Gonzaga to use in their Canvas courses.

Overview

Respondus provides an extra level of security for exams created in Canvas by providing a lockdown browser for quizzes. This browser will behave similar to other web browsers, but will not have a menu bar, web address field, or the system tray. The program will disable printing, screen captures, navigation to other websites or programs, the right click of a mouse, function keys, and task switching key strokes.

Here is an overview video of the system for use with Canvas New Quizzes and an overview video for use with Canvas Classic Quizzes. The only difference is how students access the LockDown Browser (see more information on this topic below).

Getting Started

The LockDown Browser tab should appear in the course menu, if not, add it to the menu by clicking on the Settings tab, selecting the Navigation tab, moving the LockDown Browser option to the top bundle on the page, and clicking the Save button at the bottom of the page.

When you click on the LockDown Browser tab in the course menu, you will see a list of all quizzes in the course and tabs across the top of the screen including:

- - Dashboard - where the course quizzes are listed
  - Getting Started - information to introduce you to Respondus
  - Video Tutorials - additional guides

This video will give you a quick tour of the system:

The first time you access Respondus, you will need to authorize access:

Prepare Exam

1. Create your exam(s) in the Canvas course like normal
2. Select the LockDown Browser tab in the course menu
3. Select the quiz you would like to use the LockDown Browser for:
4. Under Advanced Settings you will see additional settings - click the 'explain' links for information:
  1. - Guide for enabling access to specific web domains - individual links within a quiz will allow students to view that specific web page, but adding a domain here will allow students to see all pages in that site.
    - Guide for enabling a calculator
5. Proctoring options are available - select this if you want the Respondus monitor proctoring enabled (see information on proctoring below)
6. Save and close

Here is a video from Respondus on setting up quizzes with LockDown Browser.

Note: If you have copied a course that has Respondus enabled, the instructor must open the LockDown Browser tab to ensure that the settings have activated in the new course.

Practice Exam Strongly Recommended

It is highly recommended to provide the students with a non-graded sample quiz to let them experience Respondus before taking a real exam. The sample quiz should be available for the full semester/session and be setup with unlimited attempts so students can access it again if they switch computers.

How Students Access Respondus

Canvas has two different kinds of exams: classic and new, and they each are identified to instructors by a rocket icon:

Classic quiz =

New quiz =

Note: Students only see a solid rocket for either quiz - it is recommended you let students know which kind of quiz you have created

For Classic quizzes, students will follow these steps to start the quiz with LockDown Browser:

1. 1. When students click on the quiz, Canvas will provide this link to students to download and install LockDown Browser:
    https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=572100061
the system will guide students through these steps. This step is only required the first time a student uses Respondus.
  2. Students will open the LockDown Browser application
  3. It will automatically open Canvas
  4. Navigate to the quiz and start it
  5. LockDown Browser will be in effect until the student submits the quiz

For New quizzes, students will follow these steps:

1. 1. Log into Canvas in their regular browser and open the quiz
  2. If LockDown Browser has not been previously installed, the student will be instructed to do this now
  3. When the quiz is opened, LockDown Browser will automatically start
  4. LockDown Browser will be in effect until the student submits the quiz

Proctoring Exams

There are three options for proctoring exams:

- - Not to proctor
  - Respondus Monitor - automated proctoring that records the student with their webcam
  - Instructor live proctor - instructor can monitor students with Zoom

- - If you select the option to require Respondus Monitor you can choose to record the webcam, webcam and screen, or screen only

Startup Sequence

By default, all options will be selected for the start-up sequence - these are things students will have to do before they can start the quiz. Please uncheck all the items that are not necessary. Remember, the student's face will be in the video, so photo and ID are probably not needed.

❗️For Gonzaga courses, please do not use the Show ID or Environment Check options.

One of the new options is to require a second camera. Students are able to use their phone as a second phone positioned beside them for a different angle. The system will show them a QR code to scan and then the phone will be connected.

This option has been used for science labs, sign language demonstrations, and other participatory assignments.

Reviewing Results

The instructor can see if students left the lockdown browser during the exam:

Go back to the LockDown Browser tab in the course
Find the quiz you are interested in
If a student left early, you will see a notification number next to the quiz - click on the dropdown to select the 'Review Early Exits' option:
The next page will display the student's name, time they left the quiz, and why

If proctoring was used for the quiz, you can see results by:

Go to the LockDown Browser tab in the course
Find the quiz you are interested in
Click the down arrow to see the 'Class Results' option
All students' names are listed and you can click the [+] sign next to a name to see the results, listed flags, and recordings
